Jega hails North Eastern University’s ‘scientific innovations, infrastructure’

Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has praised the North-Eastern University, (NEU), Gombe for its ‘scientific innovations, infrastructure and serene environment’.

During a courtesy visit to the university, Professor Jega who was also a former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), expressed admiration for the NEU’s commitment to excellence, noting that it stands out among private universities in Nigeria in terms of infrastructure and practical skills.

“Many private universities are commercially driven, focusing on profit rather than quality, but North-Eastern University, Gombe stands out as an institution built on purpose, excellence, and genuine commitment to national development,” he said.

Jega encouraged other universities to emulate NEU’s example, prioritising student training, practical skills, and research-based development.

He commended the university’s investment in scientific innovation, citing the Centre for African Medicinal Plant Research (CAMPRE) as a world-class research hub unmatched in Nigeria.

The former INEC chairman also visited the Anas Aremeyaw Anas Multimedia, Content Creation & Innovation Centre in the university where he was hosted for an interview inside the university’s modern television studio.

He encouraged the university to maintain consistency in its mission, strengthen its areas of competitive advantage, and continue shaping students who are academically grounded and practically skilled.

Earlier in his welcome address, the founder and Pro-chancellor of the university, Dr Sani Jauro, expressed appreciation to Jega for the visit and briefed him on the university’s mission, progress in academic development, research culture, and its commitment to building one of the finest private universities in Nigeria.

He emphasised NEU’s focus on quality education, innovation, and strong moral values that shape students into responsible citizens.

Also, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, of the university, Dr Sani Isyaka, spoke on the university’s academic growth, NEU’s NUC-approved programmes, quality assurance systems, and standards, research and innovation capacity, students’ development, practical skills, international collaborations and global outlook, detailing recent partnerships in Asia, Europe, and Africa, positioning NEU as a rising global institution.

He noted that these four pillars represent the university’s unique strength and long-term strategic direction.

Speaking afterwards, the Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern University, Professor Yusuph Amuda Yahaya, described Professor Jega’s commendation as “powerful encouragement and a strong validation of NEU’s academic and institutional trajectory”.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening research, maintaining quality standards, and consolidating NEU’s position as a model for Nigerian tertiary institutions.
