NIS warns against illegal travel abroad

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against traveling abroad without proper clearance and documentation, highlighting the serious legal and security risks associated with irregular migration.
Speaking to journalists in Bauchi following a public awareness walk organized by the Service, Bauchi State Controller, Abubakar Umar, emphasized that the campaign aimed to educate citizens, particularly young people, on lawful and safe channels for international travel.
“Many Nigerians fall victim to human traffickers and unscrupulous travel agents due to lack of adequate information,” Umar said.
“Irregular migration often results in detention, deportation, and other hardships for travelers who fail to comply with international travel regulations.
”He noted that illegal migration contributes to transnational crimes, including human trafficking, document falsification, and migrant smuggling, posing significant threats to national security and the welfare of citizens.
The Controller stressed that the NIS is not only focused on enforcing immigration laws but also on sensitizing the public about safe and legal migration practices.
He further stated that the Service is strengthening collaboration with security agencies, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to address challenges associated with irregular migration and enhance border management.
Umar urged Nigerians intending to travel abroad to consult immigration offices nationwide and ensure all travel documents are valid before embarking on any international journey.
“Proper guidance and compliance with immigration procedures are crucial for protecting our citizens and ensuring safe travel abroad,” he added
