Following the successful completion of the 2025 Annual Fitness Walk organised by the Coalition of Physical Fitness Associations in Bauchi State, one of the participating clubs, Dynamics Physical Fitness Club, Yelwa, hosted a reception and award ceremony to honour some of its leaders and members for their outstanding contributions to the growth of the club.

The event was held shortly after the statewide fitness exercise, bringing together members, community leaders and health advocates.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chairman of the club, Dr. Usman Hassan, explained that the reception has become an annual tradition, usually organised at the end of the year after the completion of the coalition’s fitness walk.

According to him, the event is meant to appreciate members who have distinguished themselves through commitment, leadership and support to the club’s activities.

Also addressing the gathering, the Club Coach, Salisu Yayaji, disclosed that Dynamics Physical Fitness Club has been in existence for over ten years.

He noted that members engage in regular exercise sessions, particularly on weekends, with the aim of improving both physical and mental wellbeing.

He emphasised that consistent physical activity plays a vital role in disease prevention and overall quality of life, urging the public to embrace exercise as a daily habit.

In a keynote lecture on the health benefits of physical exercise, a medical doctor and member of the club, Dr. Bala Saleh Chigero, described exercise as “a special form of medicine” that is increasingly important in modern times due to sedentary lifestyles and overreliance on motorised transportation.

Dr. Chigero explained that regular exercise positively affects virtually all systems of the human body. He said it helps regulate heart function, improves breathing, strengthens muscles, maintains muscle tone, and supports the proper functioning of vital organs such as the kidneys.

According to him, exercise also plays a crucial role in regulating insulin levels in the body, thereby helping to prevent and control conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

Drawing comparisons between past and present lifestyles, Dr. Chigero observed that earlier generations were generally more physically active, which contributed to their strength and longevity.

He lamented that many children and young people today rarely walk, as they are driven everywhere from nursery school to university, leading to poor physical development and increased health risks.

He further noted that misconceptions about body size, particularly the belief that obesity is a sign of good living, have contributed to neglect of physical fitness.

He stressed that in many developed societies, obesity is often associated with poor nutrition and inactivity, while healthier lifestyles are prioritised.

Quoting the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Chigero stated that adults are advised to engage in at least one hundred and fifty minutes (150 minutes) of moderate physical activity per week.

This, he said, could be achieved through thirty minutes of exercise at least five times a week, or fifty minutes three times weekly.

He added that simple activities such as brisk walking are highly effective forms of exercise, as they engage multiple parts of the body.

Dr. Chigero cautioned against overexertion, noting that exercise has its own “dosage” and should be done gradually, especially for beginners.

He advised that people new to exercise should start under the guidance of trained coaches and increase intensity progressively to avoid health complications.

The event was attended by dozens of club members, including the community head of Yelwa, Muallayidi Malam Garba Ibrahim.

During the ceremony, awards of recognition were presented to several leaders of the club, including Dr. Usman Hassan (Vice Chairman), Malam Sani (Assistant Coach), and Muhammad Sani Muazu (Public Relations Officer), among others.

The organisers described the occasion as not only a celebration of commitment and service, but also a renewed call for the public to adopt physical exercise as a vital tool for healthy living.
