Stakeholders in Bauchi State have validated the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy (2026–2030), a strategic framework designed to tackle water and sanitation challenges while ensuring sustainable service delivery across the state.
Speaking at the validation workshop on Friday, Mr Samaila Tela, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, said the policy provides a comprehensive roadmap for improving access to safe, reliable and inclusive WASH services for all residents.
Tela noted that the policy focuses on strengthening institutional capacity, expanding infrastructure, promoting behavioural change and enhancing climate resilience in the sector.
“The successful implementation of this policy will significantly improve public health outcomes, protect the environment and create socio-economic opportunities for communities,” he said.
The workshop was organised by the Women Development Association for Self Sustenance (WODASS), with support from WaterAid Nigeria, to enable stakeholders to review and validate the document.

A representative of WaterAid, Mr Mashat Mallo, said the policy prioritises expanding access to water supply services in rural communities and small towns through climate-resilient investments.
He explained that the strategy includes rehabilitation of non-functional water systems, expansion of piped networks and adoption of renewable energy technologies such as solar-powered water schemes.
Mallo added that the policy targets an increase in access to water supply services.
He said it also provides for the construction of WASH facilities in schools, healthcare centres and public places, particularly in underserved rural and peri-urban communities.
Mallo said the policy aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
