Veteran Journalist warns against unethical reporting, urges stricter regulation

A respected veteran journalist, Alhaji Inuwa Bello, has urged media practitioners across Nigeria to recommit themselves to professionalism and ethical reporting, warning that irresponsible journalism continues to fuel tension in communities, particularly in regions already prone to conflict.
Speaking on the theme “The Media’s Role in Conflict-Sensitive Reporting,” Bello underscored that journalism remains a critical instrument for national development only when practiced within the boundaries of established ethical and professional standards.
He noted that regulatory bodies such as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) exist to uphold these standards and protect the public interest.
However, he cautioned that deviation from such guidelines has repeatedly contributed to crises across the country.According to him, journalists must exercise caution before going on air or publishing a report, taking into account the potential impact of their words on their audiences.
He noted that the absence of adequate training, coupled with a decline in professional standards, has created room for sensational and harmful reporting that often escalates conflict rather than resolving it.
Bello also expressed concern over the rapid rise of unregulated media platforms, many of which operate primarily for profit without adherence to journalistic ethics or editorial oversight.
