Cleric calls for food subsidy, enhanced security for farmers in Borno

An Islamic cleric, Imam Kabdu, has called on goCleric calls for food subsidy, enhanced security for farmers in Borno vernments to stock and sell food items to citizens at subsidised rates to cushion the effects of hardship and food insecurity in Borno.
Delivering his Friday sermon in Maiduguri, Kabdu expressed concern over the difficult economic situation facing many families.He noted that insecurity in parts of the state had prevented many farmers from accessing their farmlands during the current farming season.
The cleric appealed to the government to establish food distribution outlets where essential commodities could be sold at affordable prices to help vulnerable households cope with rising living costs.
Kabdu also urged the government and security agencies to strengthen security in farming communities and provide adequate protection for farmers willing to cultivate their lands.
According to him, many residents depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.He added that the ongoing security threats have discouraged farming activities, raising fears of reduced food production and increased hardship.
He further called on authorities to provide humanitarian assistance and other forms of support to affected farmers who may be unable to cultivate their farms this year due to insecurity.
Kabdu also urged residents to seek Allah’s mercy through prayers, repentance and forgiveness, stressing the need for moral uprightness and faith during challenging times.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that since early February, insurgents have reportedly imposed a ban on farming in several communities in northern Borno.
The non-state actors threatened violence against residents who attempted to cultivate land during the planting season.(NAN)
