Bauchi Assembly Urges Swift Action on Flooding Crisis in Barkatalami Community

The Bauchi State House of Assembly has called on the Executive Arm of Government to urgently address the persistent flooding and waterlogging affecting residents of Unguwar Arewa (Barkatalami) in Bulkachuwa, following the adoption of a motion during plenary.

The motion, sponsored by Hon. Nasiru Ahmed Ala, representing Madara/Chinade Constituency, and co-sponsored by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, alongside the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jamilu Umar Dahiru, highlighted the growing environmental and public health concerns in the area.

Presenting the motion, Ala decried the recurring hardship caused by flooding and stagnant water, noting that the situation continues to threaten lives, damage property, and disrupt economic activities.

He attributed the problem to the absence of an effective drainage system, leading to uncontrolled water flow, erosion of roads, and structural damage to homes.

He further warned that stagnant water in low-lying areas has increased the risk of malaria and other water-borne diseases, while also weakening soil stability and endangering buildings.

In its resolution, the Assembly urged the government to construct a durable drainage system and reclaim waterlogged areas.

It also directed relevant ministries and agencies to carry out a comprehensive assessment and implement sustainable flood control measures.

Lawmakers stressed that prompt intervention is critical to protecting lives, improving environmental conditions, and preventing a looming public health crisis.
