Bauchi Assembly Passes Two Key Bills, Receives 6 executives proposals

The Bauchi State House of Assembly on Tuesday advanced its legislative agenda by passing two significant bills into law and receiving six executive communications aimed at enhancing governance and service delivery across key sectors of the state.

Presiding over the plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, led proceedings that commenced with prayers, roll call, and the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting following a minor amendment raised by the member representing Darazo Constituency, Hon. Saidu Suleiman Darazo.

During the session, the House Majority Leader, Hon. Saleh Hodi Jibir, presented six communications from the Executive Arm of Government.

The proposals included amendments to the laws establishing the Bauchi State Private Health Institution Regulatory Agency (BAPHIRA), the Bauchi State Environmental Protection and Conservation Agency (BASEPA), and the Bauchi State Sports Commission.

Other executive requests before the Assembly sought the establishment of the Aliko Dangote College of Nursing Sciences and the Mining Institute, Alkaleri, as well as the screening and confirmation of Bashir Adamu Rishi as Commissioner and member of the State Executive Council.

The House referred the proposed bills to the Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative consideration and directed the commissioner nominee to appear before lawmakers for screening.

Speaker Suleiman also announced the defection of 22 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), while Hon. Mubarak Haruna formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawmakers observed prayers for the deceased, including Alhaji Aminu Adamu Jumba, Alhaji Shehu Yahaya Jalam, and the mother of an Assembly staff member.

The Assembly further adopted reports on the repeal of the Bauchi State Geographic Information Service Law 2020 and the establishment of the Bauchi State Geographic Information System Agency, as well as amendments to the Aminu Saleh College of Education, Azare Law 2016. Both bills scaled third reading and were passed into law.

The House later adjourned sitting to June 10, 2026.
