NEDC, Borno First Lady Launch Fertilizer Distribution to 1,000 Women Farmers

The First Lady of Borno State, Dr. Falmata Babagana Zulum, has officially flagged off the distribution of fertilizers to 1,000 women farmers across the state, describing the initiative as a major step toward empowering women, strengthening food security, and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Zulum said the programme, a partnership between the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and the Office of the First Lady, represents more than the distribution of agricultural inputs.
According to her, it symbolizes hope, resilience, and a shared commitment to improving the livelihoods of women who play a critical role in the agricultural sector.
She commended the leadership of the NEDC for the intervention, noting that meaningful development is achieved through strategic collaboration among institutions.
Dr. Zulum emphasized that women remain the backbone of agricultural production in rural communities, contributing significantly to farming, livestock management, food processing, and trade.
The First Lady noted that providing quality fertilizers to female farmers would increase crop yields, improve household incomes, and enhance economic independence.
She also highlighted the commitment of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration to agricultural transformation through investments in mechanization, irrigation, extension services, and farmer-support programmes.
Dr. Zulum urged beneficiaries to utilize the fertilizers responsibly and adopt modern farming techniques to maximize productivity.
She further called on development partners, financial institutions, and the private sector to expand support for women farmers through access to finance, technology, and markets.
She concluded by reaffirming that a thriving agricultural sector remains essential to the peace, stability, and economic prosperity of Borno State and the North-East region.
