The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Bauchi State Council, has called on the state government to establish a clear and actionable framework for settling outstanding gratuities owed to retired civil servants.
The appeal was made during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, jointly organised by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Speaking at the event, the NLC State Chairperson, Dauda Shuaibu, stressed that retirees who dedicated decades of service to the state deserve to exit service with dignity and financial security.
“Our senior citizens who served this state for 35 years deserve to retire in dignity. We appeal for a clear framework to settle the backlog of gratuities owed to them. Let us wipe the tears of our pensioners,” he said.
The union also urged Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed to commence the immediate distribution of houses constructed under the Civil Servants Housing Scheme, warning that delays could lead to structural damage due to the approaching rainy season.
While commending the government for initiating the housing project, Shuaibu expressed concern that leaving the houses unoccupied exposes them to deterioration from windstorms and weather conditions.
In addition, the NLC requested the provision of two 18-seater buses to enhance its operational efficiency, noting its coordinating role for over 42 affiliate unions across the state.
In his address, Gov. Mohammed who was represented by his deputy Auwal Jatau acknowledged the contributions of workers to the socio-economic development of Bauchi State and reiterated his administration’s commitment to their welfare.
He noted that the government had implemented the ₦70,000 national minimum wage and strengthened payroll systems to ensure transparency and sustainability in salary and pension payments.
The governor also highlighted ongoing investments in agriculture, poverty reduction programmes, and security initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and creating a conducive environment for decent work.
He commended organised labour for maintaining industrial harmony and assured continued collaboration to promote peace, progress, and shared prosperity in the state.
