The Rotary Club of Bauchi Central has begun a free eye treatment of 90 residents of Inkil community in Bauchi Local Government Area.

The exercise is being implemented in collaboration with Shen Initiative for Pregnant Women and Out-of-school Children, aims to improve access to quality eye care and reduce burden of medical costs.

The President of the club, Mr Adeyemi Adekunle, said this on Monday at the inauguration of the exercise.

He said the initiative aligned with the club’s humanitarian mandate aimed at providing medical care to the people.

Adekunle said the outreach features a range of services including blood pressure checks, provision of eye glasses, antenatal care, deworming, diabetes screening, routine immunisation, malaria testing, and free medication.

He said medical experts would attend to patients, while cases requiring further attention would be referred to hospitals.

“We plan to attend to between 80 and 90 people with eye-related challenges, although we brought 50 eyeglasses because not all will require them,” he said.

He said healthcare is one of Rotary’s core areas of focus globally.

The chairman said the club was also involved in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, and polio eradication efforts.

Mr Taiwo Oluwaseun, Executive Director, Shen Initiative, said the partnership focussed at supporting pregnant women who had limited access to antenatal and maternal healthcare services.

Also, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi, a community leader in the area, lauded the gesture, describing it as timely and impactful.

“Anyone who cares about your health is like family. We appreciate Rotary for easing the burden on our people.” he said.
