Adolescent Girls Sensitized on SRHR, Youth-Friendly Services in Bauchi

By Amina Ahmed Bauch —

No fewer than 100 adolescent school girls have been sensitised on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and the importance of accessing youth-friendly health services in Bauchi.

The awareness forum, held at Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education, was designed to engage adolescent girls on critical SRHR issues, particularly addressing stigma surrounding contraception and promoting access to confidential health services.

Speaking during the session, Mrs Hafsat Musa, a gender and reproductive health expert from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), provided an overview of youth-friendly services and how adolescents can access support without fear of judgement.

Musa emphasised the need for young people to utilise designated “adolescent corners” in health facilities, where they can receive accurate information and services in a safe and confidential environment.

She encouraged participants to become peer advocates by sharing knowledge with their colleagues and contributing to efforts aimed at improving adolescent health outcomes.

In his remarks, the Deputy Dean, Student Affairs, Adamu Tafawa Balewa College of Education, expressed appreciation to the organisers for selecting the institution for the initiative.

He described the project as timely and impactful, noting that many adolescents lack access to accurate SRHR information, making them vulnerable to misinformation and risky behaviours.

According to him, such interventions are crucial in equipping young people with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

Our Correspondents reports that the programme is part of a three-month rapid response intervention supported by Ipas Nigeria to improve adolescent access to SRHR information and services.
